GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING

GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING is shielded outdoor lighting and/or the application of motion sensors to outdoor lighting to avoid lighting up the night sky unnecessarily.

GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING = DARK SKY FRIENDLY LIGHTING

Above is an example of good neighbour residential lights in the municipality of Mississippi Mills. These exterior lights are shielded so no glare is produced. Light is not wasted and the light beam is directed down to where it is needed. This helps keep the skies free of light pollution. The lights in the picture were purchased from Home Depot and RONA.

GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING for your home is one way to keep energy costs down and limit glaring lights. This type of lighting is often called Dark Sky Friendly.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

A NightSaver® shield fits over the bulb inside your existing outdoor light to give ambient down light.

You don't have to go far to help protect your night sky. These effective easy to install light shields are available at Home Hardware.

OUR LOCAL OBSERVATORY

Mississippi Mills is the home of the Fred Lossing Observatory (FLO) maintained and operated by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC). Located at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area, it was built by the scientific community with high-quality optics from the National Research Council of Canada. Thanks to the continued preservation of the night sky at the Mill of Kintail, the local dark skies have permitted the visual discovery of five comets, making the FLO the only observatory in Canada to do this.

Star parties at the Mill of Kintail offer the public a chance to view the skies with experienced astronomers using telescopes. These night sky enthusiasts are pleased to share their knowledge of the wonders of the heavens.

CONSIDER THIS...

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Excessive lighting is a hazard to drivers and pedestrains. Glaring lights can significantly reduce the night vision of drivers. Research supports that the constant flood of artificial light disturbs biological rhythms of animals and people.

ENERGY COSTS

Excessive lighting or poorly aimed light wastes 30% of the energy. Introducing higher wattage lamps for the same job equals higher energy costs. Light that illuminates the sky is wasted energy. Below is an example of wasted light.

GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING OPTIONS

Choose shielded light fixtures. Any fixture where the light bulb is concealed is good. Use motion sensor detectors on outdoor lights to light only when necessary.

GOOD NEIGHBOUR LIGHTING not only preserves the quality of night skies, it saves money, reduces energy consumption, and keeps the light from shining into your neighbour's property.
